After serving in World War II, John Amato Sr. returned home took to the car business. In 1958, after working his way up, he was able to get his first store in Grayslake, IL.Â
In 1961, Ford came calling and Amato made its first appearance in Milwaukee. Southgate Ford was opened on South 27th Street.
In 1980, Amato Automotive purchased an Oldsmobile store and moved it to North 76th Street.Â
In 1984, after 30 years in the business, John Amato Sr. sold the business to his son, John S. Amato. John S. has grown the business to what it is today. Over the years, he built the body shops, an in-house finance company, and held franchises such as Oldsmobile, Hyundai, Mazda, Ford, Cadillac, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram.
After being family owned and operated 60 plus years, the third generation is now involved in the business and is excited to continue to serve the Milwaukee and neighboring communities.
